Silicon Carbide Chips Gain Attention for Powering EVs

Background
The production of lithium is growing rapidly, which is beneficial to the supply of EV batteries. Tesla, is one of the companies who has built lithium refineries for its vehicle manufacture.

Morgan Stanley indicates that the EV market share of global auto sales already has 8%. The potential growth rate already surpasses 25-30%, as the previous estimation. Investors seeking the equivalent commodities of oil, so the lithium receives great attention. 

Although lithium remains a critical resource in EV production and with added value, hedge fund managers and analysts see silicon carbide chips as another potential opportunity in EV industry.

About SiC Chips
The SiC chips can operation at a higher temperature, and only needs a simpler cooling system. The working temperature of silicon carbide power devices can reach more than 600°C, which is 4 times that of equivalent silicon devices, and can withstand more extreme working environments. This is due to the high temperature resistance of SiC wafers.

The SiC transistors have superior power switching capabilities and lower leakage than lithium. Also, the SiC-based inverters enable EVs to charge in 7 minutes, extend their range by 5-10%, and reduce battery size by 10%.

The application of SiC chips for powering EVs now sees in some  companies that owned edging technology, such as Tesla Model 3 and BYD Han models(a leading EV company in China).

Production
The preparation process of SiC power devices includes SiC powder synthesis, single crystal growth, wafer cutting, grinding and polishing, epitaxy (coating), front-end process (chip preparation), and back-end packaging. 

Despite the intricate and complex production process of SiC wafers and fabrication of SiC chips is still a burden for mass production, the analysts weigh in and SiC chips are emerging as a game changer of power supply.
