BP signed a contract with ThyssenKrupp to promote decarburization of steel production
Anglo American and ThyssenKrupp Steel have signed an agreement to collaborate on new ways to decarbonize steelmaking.
West Asia Import and Export was informed that the collaboration will jointly research, in order to accelerate the development of high-quality inputs for low carbon steel production, using conventional blast furnaces and direct reduced iron processes.
As part of its tkH2Steel transformation concept, ThyssenKrupp Steel's coal-based blast furnaces will be replaced by direct reduction plants using hydrogen. To this end, the company is working with a number of partners to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from steel across the board, says Chief Technology Officer Arnd Köfler. Together with Anglo American, the steelmaker will "explore how best to use high-grade iron ore in the production process to reduce emissions," Köfler said.
Anglo American has taken a comprehensive approach to the challenge of climate change to decarbonize its operations, building on the commitments set out in its 2018 Sustainable Mining Plan. Reducing CO2 emissions across the steel value chain includes investing in environmentally friendly technologies and working closely with steelmakers to support their specific decarbonization efforts.
Peter Whitcutt, Anglo American's marketing director, said: "Anglo American's high-quality iron ore products are poised to play an important role in enabling the production of low carbon steel at scale."
