Turkey earthquake may have a significant impact on the local steel industry

A series of earthquakes in southeast Turkey on Feb 6th affected many enterprises, including steel producers, remills and processing enterprises in Iskenderun, one of Turkey's major steel production areas, with an annual production capacity of more than 15 million tons. Although there is no official detailed information about the damage of the steel plant, some enterprises are likely to stop production.

Logistics and infrastructure are another big problem. Many roads were damaged by the earthquake and were impassable. One of the main steel logistics hubs, the wharf of Iskenderun Port, collapsed. At the same time, the operation of other ports continues.

Although Turkey's pipeline operator BOTAS said that the main pipeline was not damaged, it decided to stop supplying natural gas to some areas near the epicenter as a precautionary measure.

Power supply has become another issue of concern. The earthquake caused serious damage to the energy infrastructure. Both transmission lines and natural gas transmission and distribution lines were damaged.

In general, although there is no official data yet, the impact of the tragic event on the local steel industry may be huge.
